ISPE Announces 2008 Membership Award Winners at Annual Meeting

(TAMPA, FLORIDA, USA, 21 NOVEMBER 2008) – ISPE, a global not-for-profit association of 25,000 pharmaceutical science and manufacturing professionals, announced its 2008 award winners and recognized their contributions to the pharmaceutical industry and the Society. Robert P. Best, ISPE’s President and CEO, presented the honors at the Society’s 2008 Annual Meeting held on 26-29 October in Boca Raton, Florida, USA.

An award was established in honor of longtime ISPE adviser, colleague, and friend Joe Phillips, who passed away in April 2008. The Joseph X. Phillips Professional Achievement Award was presented to Phillips’ wife, Dolores Phillips, and sons John and Joseph Jr., and will be presented in the future to the ISPE Member who has made significant contributions not only to ISPE, but to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. ISPE’s 2008 Annual Meeting was dedicated to Phillips.

Additional winners include:

Robert E. Chew, P.E. won the Max Seales Yonker Member of the Year, which honors the ISPE Member who made the most significant contribution to the Society during the past year.

Michelle Gonzalez received the ISPE Special Recognition Award, which honors an ISPE Member who has made a significant contribution not only to ISPE, but to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

Kevin C. Martin and Arthur D. Perez, PhD won the Roger F. Sherwood Article of the Year Award for their article titled, “GAMP® 5 Quality Risk Management Approach,” published in the May/June issue of Pharmaceutical Engineering magazine.

Steven J. Wisniewski received the Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award. This award honors an ISPE Member who made significant, long-term contributions to the Society. Named after one of the Society’s founders and most accomplished Presidents, recipients are considered to be Members of ISPE’s “Hall of Fame.”

Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal is the 2008 Student Chapter of the Year Award Winner. They are sponsored by ISPE’s Central Canada Chapter.

The GAMP Community of Practice was named the Committee of the Year to honor them for their hard work in releasing the fifth edition of GAMP® 5: A Risk-Based Approach to Compliant GxP Computerized Systems.

Japan is ISPE’s Affiliate of the Year, recognized for outstanding work as reflected by membership development and services, management, industry and Society support, and innovation.

NNE Pharmaplan was named Company of the Year and recognized for outstanding support provided by a company as reflected by significant active participation in the Society’s committees, councils, task teams, Communities of Practices, programs, and activities.

Student Poster Presentation Awards in the Graduate Category went to Nicola Francis, Drexel University, Delaware Valley Chapter, and Padmaja Magadala, Northeastern University, Boston Area Chapter. Winners in the Undergraduate Category were Maureen Cheung, University of Akron, Great Lakes Chapter, and Jason Lajoie, University of Massachusetts, Boston Area Chapter.

North American/South American Affiliate Council Awards -

The Carolina-South Atlantic Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Platinum Grand Award for Excellence and Innovation for the second year in a row. Runners-up for this prestigious award included:

• The San Diego Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Platinum First Place Award for Excellence and Innovation for the second year in a row.

• The San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Platinum Outstanding Award for Excellence and Innovation. The Chapter also won the North American/South American Affiliate Council First Place Award for Innovation in Student Programs.

• The Boston Area Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Grand Award for Innovation in Communications.

• The Carolina-South Atlantic Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Grand Award for Innovation in Student Programs.

• The Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council First Place Award for Innovation in Communications. The chapter also won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Grand Award for Innovation in Programs and Events.

• The Delaware Valley Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council First Place Award for Innovation in Student Programs.

• The Puerto Rico Chapter won the North American/South American Affiliate Council Outstanding Award for Innovation in Student Programs.

Special Recognition

Special recognition awards were given to document task teams for their work on two successful ISPE technical documents. The first team was honored for their work on the GAMP® 5: A Risk Based Approach to Compliant GxP Computerized Systems and included Anders Bredesen, Sam Brooks, Jay Buffi, Winnie Cappucci, Mark Cherry, Chris Clark, Gail Evans, Heinrich Hamblock, Colin Jones, Paige Kane, Tony Margetts, Arthur (Randy) Perez, Peter Robertson, Kate Samways, David Selby, and Sion Wyn. The second team was honored for their work on the ISPE Good Practice Guide: Good Engineering Practice and included Christopher Derrett, Mark Foss, and Nicholas Haycocks.
