CRANBURY, NJ--(Marketwired - February 04, 2014) -

PeriGen, the global leader in providing evidence-based perinatal system solutions with real-time clinical decision support, today announced the launch of its new web-based tool, Category II Management Algorithm. The online tool is based on a recent publication by noted clinical experts and is intended to support the management of patients during FHR category II -- which affects more than 80 percent of labors.

The free app, available at www.perigen.com and accessed via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets as well as PCs, is being launched this week at PeriGen Booth 704 during the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) 34th Annual Meeting at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside in New Orleans.

The app is based on the article “Intrapartum Management of Category II Fetal Heart Rate Tracings: Towards Standardization of Care” published in the August 2013 edition of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The article’s authors are OB experts including PeriGen Chief Medical Officer Thomas J. Garite, M.D. By answering a few questions about the tracing and labor status, the application will process this information through the algorithm and present its conclusions. Users can get to the suggested outcome in seconds within four to eight clicks.

“More than 80 percent of patients in labor spend time in the FHR Category II,” said PeriGen CEO Matthew Sappern. “The impressive body of research that has expanded over the years and resulted in this publication reflects the work of few that truly touches many. PeriGen is pleased to support the authors by extending real-time access to all of this remarkable work to clinicians.”

PeriGen will demonstrate its PeriCALM® fetal surveillance solutions and the new Category II Management Algorithm app in Booth 704 at the SMFM annual meeting.

PeriGen also has a strong event presence in post-graduate and poster presentations. Dr. Garite is co-director of the full-day post-graduate courses titled “Electronic Fetal Monitoring 2014: Where Are We?” on Feb. 4. His co-director is Sean C. Blackwell, M.D., Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, UT Health-University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Emily Hamilton, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG, PeriGen’s senior vice president of clinical research, will present:

  • A post-graduate course on “Current State of Computerized FHR Interpretation” on Feb. 4 from 1:40 to 2:20 p.m., CST and
  • A poster presentation on “Baseline Variability in Normal Term Births and in Births Complicated by Neonatal Depression” on Feb. 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. CST.
