“The line was started to give community residents whose primary language is either Chinese or Korean an easy way to obtain referrals to doctors who also speak their language,” says Paul Pickard, the hospital’s senior director of Public Affairs and Marketing. “Since 50 percent of the hospital’s zip code is Asian, we felt we had to do more to make our physicians available to the community.
“A Chinese or Korean speaker calls a designated telephone number,” Pickard explains. “A New York-based translation representative answers in the caller’s language and determines his/her need. The representative puts the caller on hold and contacts Beryl who has the hospital’s database of information. Beryl gives the translation representative the requested information who then reconnects with the caller and provides the information in the caller’s language. Beryl keeps the demographic information and sends me regular monthly reports. We couldn’t be happier with the quality, efficiency and transparency of the service provided by Beryl.”
