Medicare Modernization Act Enables Secure Horizons To Expand Its Medicare Advantage Plan In Cowlitz County, Washington

CYPRESS, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. received approval by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to expand its Secure Horizons Medicare Advantage Plan to Cowlitz County in Southern Washington. Secure Horizons currently serves nearly 44,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Washington.

Enrollment in the expanded Secure Horizons service area will be effective June 1, 2005.

According to Howard Phanstiel, PacifiCare’s chairman and chief executive officer, the nearly 16,500 Medicare-eligible beneficiaries in Cowlitz County will now have a new, affordable Medicare Advantage option.

“Congress has taken a historical step to modernize the Medicare program, and we are taking action to make health care coverage more affordable and accessible for seniors by expanding our Secure Horizons Medicare Advantage Plan in Cowlitz County,” he said. “The Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act passed by Congress and signed by the President in December 2003 has enabled us to enhance benefits and reduce premiums and copayments for Medicare beneficiaries, explore new opportunities to expand health care services and offer new, innovative health care products and services for seniors.”

In 2004, PacifiCare used increased funding received under the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act to enhance benefits for Washington-state Medicare beneficiaries by providing more comprehensive brand and generic prescription drug coverage, adding new benefits and lowering health plan premiums and copayments. In addition to a $40 monthly health plan premium, the new Secure Horizons Medicare Advantage plan will offer unlimited generic prescription drug coverage with a $9 copayment for a 30-day supply and $18 copayment for a 90-day mail order supply. The plan will include a $10 copayment for a physician office visit and a $20 copayment for a specialist office visit.

“As a company that has served the senior community for nearly 20 years, we feel PacifiCare has the expertise and experience to provide the kind of health care coverage that seniors have been asking for,” Phanstiel added. “We believe the private sector is well-suited to offer Medicare beneficiaries more options and flexibility and at a lower cost.
