MILFORD, Conn., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Impliant Inc. today announced that its TOPS(TM) System, the first total motion-preserving posterior spine implant to begin clinical trials, will be unveiled at the Spine Arthroplasty Society (SAS) Meeting in New York City. Two papers will be presented from the podium at the SAS Meeting in addition to a company-sponsored symposium to introduce the TOPS(TM) System to surgeons interested in participating in U.S. and European clinical trials. The SAS Global Symposium on Motion Preservation Technology is being held May 4-7, 2005 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York. The Impliant symposium will be held on Friday, May 6, 2005 at 12:15 p.m. EDT in the Chelsea/Gotham Room at the Marriott Marquis.
Dr. Stephen Hochschuler, Chairman of the Texas Back Institute, will moderate the Impliant Symposium. Presenters include Drs. Luiz Pimenta, Larry Khoo, Paul McAfee, Andy Cappuccino, and Matt Scott-Young. Dr. Pimenta will also present at the general session a paper entitled “The TOPS(TM) Lumbar Facet Replacement System. Biomechanical evaluation, operative data and preliminary clinical results.”
“The TOPS(TM) System offers a novel mechanism for total facet replacement that preserves posterior motion without fusion,” commented Larry Khoo, M.D., Co-Director, UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. “Preliminary data from our prospective pilot study indicate positive clinical outcomes. All patients were mobilized shortly after surgery and demonstrated preservation of motion without complications. Early results with regard to pain and function have also been extremely encouraging.”
About the TOPS(TM) System
Impliant’s TOPS(TM) System, a mobile posterior device, is designed to stabilize but not fuse the affected vertebral level to alleviate pain stemming from degenerative facet arthrosis, spondylolisthesis, and spinal stenosis. The device is affixed to the spine via four pedicle screws using a standard posterior surgical approach. Impliant does not have FDA approval to market the TOPS(TM) System in the United States.
