NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Orange County’s only independent, not-for-profit hospital, rated among the top hospitals in California in a state public report evaluating hospital performance of heart bypass surgery.
The California Report on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery: 2000-2002 Hospital Data released today by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) and the Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH) compared mortality rates from 77 hospitals that regularly perform the procedure. Hoag Hospital was one of only eight hospitals in the state and the only one in Orange County to perform significantly “better than expected.”
And of the 25 hospitals that have participated in the study every year since 1997, Hoag is one of only four in the state and the only one in Southern California, with an observed-to-expected mortality ratio below 1.0 throughout the six-year period -- Hoag’s observed death rates have been consistently lower than expected.
“With our highly skilled cardiovascular surgery team and their expertise in the most advanced surgical techniques and technologies, Hoag continually strives to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients,” says Susan Goldberg, MSN, RN, vice president cardiovascular services at Hoag Hospital. “We’re pleased that our performance in the CCMRP reflects Hoag’s commitment to excellence in cardiovascular care.”
The study’s results indicate that hospitals with higher surgery volumes report better outcomes. Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute, Hoag Hospital’s cardiovascular program, performs more cardiac procedures per year than any other Orange County medical center. Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute’s cardiac surgery team -- Drs. Aidan Raney, Douglas Zusman and Colin Joyo -- practice exclusively at Hoag and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Approximately 63% of the heart surgeries they perform are bypass surgeries.
The California Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Mortality Reporting Program’s 2000-2002 Hospital Data presents findings for 77 of California’s 121 hospitals that regularly performed adult CABG surgery during 2000-2002. Officials evaluated risk-adjusted mortality rates and health care quality ratings to determine individual hospital performance. This three-year analysis includes a total of 57,388 isolated CABG surgeries, making it one of the largest public reporting programs of its kind in the nation.
