DETROIT, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Receiving Hospital, the first adult Level I Trauma Center in Detroit, is hosting the 52nd annual, Detroit Trauma Symposium (DTS) on November 11 and 12, 2004. Distinguished as one of the trauma symposiums in the country, the Detroit Trauma Symposium attracts hundreds of surgeons and other health professionals from around the world to learn more about the latest advances in trauma surgery and emergency medicine.
This two-day event addresses the continuum of care of the injured person and will focus on state-of-the-art techniques that help improve clinical outcomes. Two exciting clinical studies will be announced at the symposium, marking some recent breakthroughs in trauma and emergency medicine. The first study distinguishes Detroit Receiving Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan as one of only two referral sites in the country for a trial showing promise in promoting some sensory recovery from spinal cord injuries.
The second study involves a new blood substitute that can be used at the scene of a trauma. With recent severe blood shortages, this blood substitute could eliminate the need for donated blood in certain circumstances.
“It’s important that trauma surgeons learn from recognized leaders in the field of trauma medicine,” said Detroit Receiving trauma surgeon and DTS Committee Chair, Dr. Lawrence Diebel. Diebel is also the Chair of the Michigan Committee on Trauma and a full professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Diebel will be one of the presenters at the symposium.
“Surgeons from around the country look forward to this prestigious symposium to share knowledge and the latest scientific breakthroughs in Trauma and Emergency Medicine,” said Diebel. “And this year is particularly exciting because of these two new studies.”
