CLEARWATER, Fla., Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Avee Laboratories, a national leader in substance abuse and toxicology testing, stated today that it denies and will vigorously defend itself against allegations made in a lawsuit filed by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. The Horizon lawsuit is based on an allegation that Avee Laboratories, which was acquired by Alere Toxicology in 2011, performed quantitative drug testing that was not medically necessary.
John Peterson, Vice President and General Manager of the Medication Monitoring and Addiction Business, said: “Since the acquisition of Avee Laboratories, we have operated in a manner consistent with our longstanding commitment to quality services and stringent regulatory compliance. We believe our laboratory testing is medically necessary as supported by established medical literature, and is only utilized in accordance with physicians’ orders. Drug testing is a crucial component of diagnosis and treatment of substance-related disorders. Arbitrary restrictions create a barrier to cost-effective and beneficial medical treatment of patients suffering from addictive disorders.”
