Residents in parts of Key West, Fla., will vote today on measures to respond to Zika, which is steadily worsening in the state. Should they have a say? Or should experts decide how to tackle this serious public health issue?
Voters in Key Haven will be asked, “Are you in favor of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District conducting an effectiveness trial in Key Haven using genetically modified mosquitoes to suppress an invasive mosquito that carries mosquito-borne diseases?” Monroe County residents will address a similar question more broadly. Both referenda are non-binding.
