Opioids in Early Pregnancy May Be Tied to Birth Defects, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Study Finds

MedPageToday -- Women who take opioid analgesics in the month before and during the early months of pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects in their babies, researchers say. Although the numbers are small, the children of these mothers had significantly increased risks of congenital heart defects, spina bifida, and other conditions, Cheryl Broussard, PhD, of the CDC, and colleagues reported in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
