Is Aspirin Next For Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

March 11, 2005 -- Researchers have found a gene mutation that is linked to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The gene codes for the CFH protein, which is part of the complement family of inflammatory proteins. The complement family of proteins are a cascade of catalytic proteins, or enzymes, that mediate and amplify inflammatory responses, ultimately leading to the destruction of the offending stimulus. Antibody activity often initiates complement activation on a particular target. Inappropriate complement activation leads to destruction of healthy tissue and plays a role in several inflammatory diseases. Will aspirin be used to fight these responses?
