COLUMBIA, S.C., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Visitors to Companion Technologies’ exhibit at the American Academy of Family Physicians’ meeting next month will learn about physician practices using Companion EMR, such as Family Medicine Center of Canyon, Texas.
They went paperless, increased their charges, and were able to focus on disease management programs better when they adopted Companion EMR.
With four physicians and two nurse practitioners seeing 125 patients a day, Family Medicine Center was running out of space for paper medical records. They also had tried transcription outsourcing solutions without much success in managing the process or the cost. Illegible writing on physician reports frustrated the staff, and continuity of care was hindered because paper records were hard to find in multiple storage locations.
Family Medicine Center decided that all this could be solved if they sought an electronic medical record (EMR) software. They investigated about 10 vendors.
“We decided on Companion EMR because Companion Technologies has both a practice management and an EMR solution, and we had a great site visit with a doctor who was using both,” said Cindy Veigel, Family Medicine Center administrator. “As a result of implementing Companion EMR, we have enhanced our ability to document patient visits more consistently, resulting in charges that accurately reflect services rendered. With our medical records in an electronic format, we have situated ourselves to be able to provide meaningful reports on our disease management programs.”
Family Medicine Center began using Companion EMR in October 2003 and was paperless in its medical records by December 2003. The medical staff uses Companion EMR on wireless handheld computers. They especially like being able to use the pharmacy fax feature, and they have seen a 7.5 percent increase in their charges per visit due to better documentation and increased accuracy and confidence in coding.
Companion Technologies will demonstrate Companion EMR as well as its practice management system, Companion PM, at the AAFP’s Annual Scientific Assembly, Oct. 13-17, in Orlando, Fla., as well as at the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) annual meeting Oct. 3-6 in San Francisco, and the National Association of Community Health Centers annual meeting Sept. 19- 21 in San Francisco.
