Through the years, this biomedical center has produced breakthroughs in areas spanning cardiology, oncology, nanotechnology, two of the largest-ever biotech IPOs and over 50 life science companies.
Now, driven by the leverage of opportunity and collaboration, Houston’s research institutions and life science companies have defined a new mission:
To assure that the Houston region’s life science industry is highly competitive with other major commercial biotechnology centers through the year 2020.
This mission is led by BioHouston, a non-profit consortium of all major research and higher education institutions, every significant local government and economic development entity, life science and biotech companies, and venture capital firms with billions of dollars under management.
BioHouston’s initiatives are creating an expanded infra-structure that offers significant new opportunities for every institution, company, entrepreneur, researcher, investor, and supplier in the life science industry. These initiatives include:
COLLABORATION Building new avenues for scientific and commercial cross-fertilization and cooperation
EARLY STAGE CAPITAL ACCESS Attracting and facilitating venture capital that recognizes Houston’s potential
COMMERCIALIZATION "HOME RUNS" Making available the economic incentive, business, and civic support needed to nurture emerging companies into major success stories
You’ ve seen Houston’s achievements and growth over the years, with names like DeBakey and Cooley, Baylor College of Medicine, Cyberonics, Lexicon Genetics, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Rice University, Tanox, Texas A&M, Introgen Therapeutics and others.
