Perot Systems Selected By BT For Major London National Health Service Contract

PLANO, Texas, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Perot Systems Corporation today announced the signing of a six and a half-year contract with BT. Under the contract, Perot Systems will help deliver the integrated local electronic patient record application and system for BT, which was awarded the London local service provider contract for the National Health Service's national program for information technology in England. Total value of the contract is estimated at approximately $203 million (108 million pounds Sterling).

The new patient record system will span a population of more than 7 million citizens, involve 150,000 NHS staff, 1,660 medical physician practices, 43 hospitals and 13 care communities. When fully implemented, the system will enable NHS organizations to record and exchange patient and care information electronically, eliminating duplication of patient files, improving information-sharing between healthcare professionals, and helping to prevent medical errors.

Perot Systems' approach will be carried out through its clinical transformation organization, which provides project management, care redesign, clinical best practice solutions, and product implementation and configuration services for the company's healthcare customers worldwide.

"We are honored to be selected by BT to be part of this historic program to deliver a new IT healthcare system," said Peter Altabef, president & CEO of Perot Systems Corporation. "We will utilize our global expertise in clinical transformation, complex systems implementations and integration as part of the consortium. We look forward to working with BT to deliver a strong foundation for an improved patient care system to the NHS and the people of London."

BT was awarded the NHS London local service provider contract by the UK's Department of Health in December 2003, and Perot Systems has been a major subcontractor since then.

"We welcome the opportunity to join with BT to improve the working lives of NHS staff while enabling them to deliver improved patient care in London," said Chuck Lyles, president of Perot Systems healthcare industry group. "The combined core strengths of Perot Systems and BT will be a significant benefit to the NHS as we integrate clinical processes with business processes to make the healthcare system more efficient and effective."

In December 2003 BT was awarded a contract worth $1.79 billion (996 million pounds) over the next ten years by the Department of Health, as part of the NHS National Programme for IT.

"Perot Systems will apply its best practice capabilities to the London LSP from top to bottom -- from strategic integration design to the local deployment and implementation of system improvements with clinicians and care providers," said Suzanne Goodband, European health industry group leader for Perot Systems. "We are pleased to be working with a partner of BT's stature to accomplish the goal of an integrated patient record system."
