OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chappell Hayes Health Center, operated by Children’s Hospital & Research Center, is anticipated to become a national model for school reform that will combat West Oakland’s notorious levels of violence, homicides, abuse and dropout rates. Only 19% of McClymonds students can read at their grade level, and West Oakland has some of the highest health risks in the nation. Research indicates that students who are tired, sick, stressed or depressed have a greater risk of dropping out of school and engaging in unhealthy and violent behaviors.
The Chappell Hayes Health Center is unique because 1) the directors are nationally renowned physicians from Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland; 2) the clinic is self sustaining with 85% of the operating budget generated through third party reimbursement instead of the standard 10 - 15%; 3) the clinic includes preventive programs such as physical arts, family services, tutoring and youth development; and 4) students have designed, lead and made many of the decisions in the development of the clinic.
This new $1 million clinic was funded through an elaborate collaboration of supporters including The San Francisco Foundation, the McKesson Foundation, The County of Alameda, The City of Oakland, Oakland Unified School District, The Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, The East Bay Community Foundation and The Y and H Soda Foundation. The clinic and its affiliated programs have an annual operating budget of $2.5 million.
