IMPAC Supports Varian 4D Integrated Treatment Console

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., part of the Elekta Group and a leading provider of information technology solutions for oncology care, announced today that CentraState Medical Center, a full-service community medical center in Freehold, New Jersey, is using IMPAC’s treatment management solution to sequence radiation therapy treatments on Varian Medical Systems’ 4D Integrated Treatment Console Clinac(R). CentraState is one of several centers where IMPAC’s treatment management solution is in routine clinical use with the Varian 4D Console.

CentraState recently converted to IMPAC in order to transition their center to full image-enabled charting and practice management, and in May of 2005 they upgraded their Varian accelerator to the 4D treatment console to support Varian’s On-Board Imager(TM) (OBI). According to Jan Dragotta, clinical director of radiation oncology, “We were already planning to implement Varian’s 4D Console and OBI when we decided to convert to the IMPAC system, so IMPAC’s proven support of the new image-guided technology was critical. I was impressed by how smoothly we were able to make the transition to the 4D. It’s less than a month and we’re already treating 30 patients a day and our productivity continues to improve.

“IMPAC’s commitment to our customers drives us to provide leading-edge clinical capabilities in an open-architecture environment supporting multiple equipment manufacturers,” stated Joseph K. Jachinowski, president and CEO of IMPAC Medical Systems. “The development efforts devoted to image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) demonstrate our dedication to providing the best oncology information management system capable of supporting any combination of treatment planning and delivery equipment our customers may choose, including Elekta Synergy(R) and Varian’s On-Board Imager.”

“With 30% of our patients being treated with Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and therefore requiring pre-port setup fields, we’re looking forward to implementing OBI and manipulating and storing images as part of IMPAC’s image-enabled oncology chart,” said Dragotta. “We appreciate the value of an independent verification solution which provides us with choice and flexibility in our equipment purchases.”
