MADISON, Wis., March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Imago(R) Scientific Instruments, a world leader in atomic-scale imaging and Nanolytical(R) solutions, announced today that Dr. David Larson has been selected by the Microscopy Society of America as the prestigious 2005 Burton Medalist. The Burton Medalist award is presented to an outstanding young scientist under the age of 40 who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in microscopy and microanalysis.

David J. Larson earned a BS degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and MS and PhD degrees in materials science from the University of Wisconsin in 1996. Dr. Larson was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Metals and Ceramics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 1997 and held a National Science Foundation international research fellowship in the Materials Department and was a postdoctoral fellow at Wolfson College at the University of Oxford in 1998. David was a research staff member in the Microscopy and Microanalysis Group at ORNL in 1999. He was a research staff member in the Microscopy and Microanalysis Group at ORNL in 1999 and spent five years (1999-2004) as a thin film development engineer at Seagate Technology in the Recording Head Operations Department where he was awarded a transducer development innovative research award. Dr. Larson has more than 90 publications and more than 10 patents granted or pending.
