NEW YORK, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- ActiveHealth Management announced that it has finalized a deal to deliver physician and member messaging via its CareEngine(R) System to 192,000 plan participants of Companion HealthCare, a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. Program implementation will begin on February 1, 2005 and is an expansion of the existing relationship with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.

The ActiveHealth patented CareEngine System supports physicians and their patients by matching evidence-based medicine against member claims information with the goal of identifying gaps in care or opportunities to improve outcomes. Physicians are notified about these treatment issues via “Care Considerations,” which detail the clinical issue found and provide suggestions for changes in treatment that reflect medically accepted standards of care as reported in peer-reviewed medical literature and specialty guidelines. In the case of Companion HealthCare, members will also be notified of the treatment issue via Care Considerations that are written in easy-to-understand terminology. The goal of Care Considerations is to improve the dialog between physician and patient, thereby improving the quality of care delivered and, in turn, reducing medical costs. ActiveHealth has reported that by communicating Care Considerations to both the physician and patient, the rate of compliance with the standard of treatment is increased. More than 192,000 members of the Companion HealthCare network will benefit from clinical oversight provided by the CareEngine System.
