The Moyer Foundation Steps Up To The Plate

SEATTLE, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center today announced that The Moyer Foundation, co-founded by Jamie and Karen Moyer, (http://www.moyerfoundation.org/), will donate $1.5 million to Fred Hutchinson's Gregory Fund(R), a collaborative initiative between the two organizations, to support the center's early cancer-detection research. The Moyer Foundation's gift will be a challenge donation issued during the 29th annual Hutch Holiday Gala (http://www.hutchgala.com/) to be held at 5 p.m., Dec. 4, at the Sheraton Seattle. The Moyer Foundation will match every dollar -- up to $1.5 million -- during the Gala's "Help the Hutch" portion of the evening, an exciting 20-minute period where donors can make cash gifts to support The Gregory Fund.

"The Moyer Foundation believes in the work Fred Hutchinson is doing, in both pioneering cancer research and patient care," said Jamie Moyer, Seattle Mariners pitcher and co-founder of The Moyer Foundation.

Karen Moyer, co-founder of The Moyer Foundation, added, "We have been raised with a very strong faith and believe that everyone has the time, talent or treasure to help make a difference. We hope that supporters will meet this challenge to advance Fred Hutchinson's early cancer detection research."

"We are thrilled about The Moyer Foundation's generous challenge donation for this year's Hutch Holiday Gala," said Lee Hartwell, Ph.D., Nobel laureate and president and director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. "Research into early cancer detection provides one of the most promising opportunities to reduce death from cancer."

According to the American Cancer Society, 563,700 Americans will die of cancer this year -- that's more than 1,500 a day. Seed money, received from private organizations and individuals, helps pave the way for securing large-scale federal grants and speeds the research that could make potentially life-saving discoveries.
