Blockbusters may be good for business, but bad for your health... Part 1. Despite all the talk about genomics and personalized medicine, quite the opposite is driving the market today. The trend is toward drugs that can be used by more people more frequently. Drugs with over $1B in sales, known as "blockbusters," are all the rage. The pharmaceutical industry is simply becoming addicted to blockbusters. But what industry wouldn't be if they could get multi-billion dollar annual revenues at 90+% margins! When you ask top level pharmaceutical executives, would they rather have one blockbuster drug or two drugs with the same total sales, they will pick the blockbuster without any hesitation. So much for individualized drugs!
