Our location in San Carlos, just south of San Francisco, is part of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. It is unique because it is both a Research and Development and a Commercial Manufacturing site capable of progressing a new molecule from discovery to commercial production. The facility integrates drug development; process development; R&D, clinical, and commercial manufacturing; inhalation device development and manufacturing; quality control and assurance; and proprietary equipment design.
We specialize in pulmonary products which are a synthesis of multiple technologies that include formulation, powder processing, filling and devices. The primary focus of Research and Development here is particle engineering in which the facility pioneered the use of spray-drying technology.
San Carlos commercially manufactures the TOBI Podhaler – an inhaled form of dry powder tobramycin used in the prevention of chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. The TOBI Podhaler, currently approved for use in Europe and Canada, has dramatically reduced treatment time, allowing patients to live more independent lives.
San Carlos has a staff of 200+ people and is a significant contributor to Novartis' growth in respiratory medicines, as well as continuing to actively support surrounding communities.
