MCLEAN, Va., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Care Fusion, Inc. announced an agreement with University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center to provide barcode technology solutions for positive patient identification and phlebotomy collections. According to U.S. News & World Report, UCSF Medical Center is one of the nation’s top 10 hospitals. It is recognized throughout the world as a leader in medicine, known for compassionate and innovative care. In addition to the Medical Center, UCSF health care providers treat patients at three other main San Francisco sites: UCSF/Mount Zion, San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
For almost a century, UCSF has offered unparalleled medical treatment and today they improve patient safety by contracting with Care Fusion for Wireless CareCollect. wCareCollect(TM) allows healthcare providers to scan a patient’s barcoded wristband to positively identify the patient, verify orders, print a time-stamped barcode label, and re-scan the barcode confirming that the specimen is labeled correctly. Because the system is wireless, the care provider has up-to-the-minute patient information to assure that the right specimens are being drawn at the right time from the right patient for the right tests -- even if an order was changed just moments before.
UCSF organized an Operational Leadership Committee to explore patient barcoding applications. According to John Chapman, Director of Clinical Services, “Vendors considered for this project were selected based on a thorough literature and media search of hospital patient safety barcode applications. The decision to go with Care Fusion was based on the flexibility of their company in meeting UCSF requirements of the Phlebotomy and Blood Transfusion applications.”
Care Fusion offers other barcode enabled positive patient identification products, including: wCareMed(TM); wBloodCare(TM); wCareAssist(TM); wCareView(TM); and wCareCapture(TM). “Those products were also very attractive to UCSF,” said Chapman, “We feel there is a possibility in the future of implementing the other applications that Care Fusion offers.” The first phase of the implementation will rollout the product to the inpatient Phlebotomy team. After the success of that initiative, UCSF plans to offer wCareCollect to all nurse collects throughout the hospital. “This will improve patient safety and fit nicely in the workflow of the nursing staff,” added Chapman.
