Rainbow Babies And Children’s Hospital Release: Flu Season Poses Dangerous Risk For Children With Asthma: New Study Published In The Journal Of Pediatrics Shows A Medication May Reduce Hospital Admissions For Children With Severe Asthma

NEW YORK, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The flu is taking America by storm this season, which means parents of children with asthma need to be on high alert. Respiratory infections like influenza are more serious in patients with asthma and such infections can often lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease.

For parents of children with asthma, a sudden attack often means a trip to the emergency room. Now, a new study shows that one medication can reduce hospital admissions and send the families home sooner. The study, conducted at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, shows children suffering from acute asthma attacks are less likely to be admitted to the hospital if they receive an asthma therapy called Xopenex. The study evaluated patients from 1-18 years of age, and there were no adverse effects seen in either treatment group. These data appeared in the December issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
