SAVANNAH, Ga., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Health today announced the appointment of Jeff Boyd, Ph.D., of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as vice president of laboratory science at Memorial Health University Medical Center, and associate director of laboratory science at the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia.
An internationally known and respected scientist in molecular cancer research, Boyd is one of the world’s top scientists in the study of the alterations in genes that influence the development of uterine, ovarian, and breast cancers. Boyd has pioneered the analysis of flaws in the BRCA-1 gene that are involved in hereditary ovarian cancer and are associated with less aggressive tumors than sporadic ovarian cancer. He is also studying estrogen, which may play a role in causing some cancers by favoring genetic instability. Boyd comes to Memorial Health from the renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York where he is the director of the gynecology and breast research laboratory as well as the attending biologist and member (with tenure) of the departments of medicine and surgery.
“In the last few years, many outstanding cancer experts have come here from all over the country,” said Robert A. Colvin, president and CEO of Memorial Health. “They come to Savannah because they believe in our program. They have the confidence that the Curtis and Elizabeth Cancer Institute at Memorial Health University Medical Center is going to become one of the premier cancer treatment facilities in the country. I am pleased that yet another world-class scientist and scholar is joining us.”
Boyd will be working in conjunction with William Hoskins, M.D., director of the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Hoskins came to the Cancer Institute in 2001 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
“It is an honor and a privilege that a scientist of such tremendous stature will be joining our dedicated staff,” said Hoskins. “Dr. Boyd is known throughout the scientific and medical community for his work in molecular genetics, the field of study we will be concentrating on in our new 57,000 square-foot research and education facility. There are only a handful of labs in the entire country conducting this type of research, and one of them will be right here in Savannah under the leadership of Dr. Boyd.”
