ATLANTA, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 500,000 Americans die each year of heart attacks. Of those deaths, at least half could have been prevented if the victims had received immediate attention from someone trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, according to the American Red Cross.
In order to help save lives, Kaiser Permanente will partner with The American Red Cross for the seventh consecutive year to sponsor CPR Saturday on March 19, 2005. More than 4,000 participants are expected to earn their Adult CPR certification at seven locations throughout the metro-Atlanta area, including five Kaiser Permanente medical offices.
“Kaiser Permanente of Georgia is delighted to partner with the American Red Cross for this year’s CPR Saturday,” said Evonne Yancey, director of government and community relations. “We’ve made a major commitment toward contributing to the health and safety of the community. CPR Saturday is an ideal way we can fulfill that pledge.”
Training will be held at Kaiser Permanente’s Alpharetta, Crescent, Glenlake, Henry Towne Centre and TownPark medical centers. Residents also may attend classes at two additional sites in the Atlanta area (see list of locations below).
Classes will be offered every 30 minutes between the hours of 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the seven metro locations listed above. Participants ages 12 and older will learn vital lifesaving skills, including how to assist someone who is choking; how to perform rescue breathing; and how to do chest compressions that can sustain life until emergency medical professionals arrive at the scene.
“There is no doubt that lives will be saved as a result of the skills learned during this valuable event which, in turn, will contribute to a real sense of satisfaction for all of the participants,” Yancey added.
The course, which normally costs $45 per person, is being offered free-of- charge as a community service on CPR Saturday only, but space is limited, so pre-registration is highly recommended. Walk-ins will be accepted only as space allows at each facility. For times and registration, call the Red Cross Service Center at 1-800 RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit http://www.redcrossatlanta.org/ to access an online registration form.
