University of Notre Dame

ABOUT

The University of Notre Dame is a private research university inspired by its Catholic character to be a powerful means for doing good in the world.

It is organized into seven Colleges and Schools, including Architecture, Arts and Letters, Business, Engineering, Global Affairs, Law, and Science. The Graduate School offers more than 50 master’s, doctoral, and professional degree programs.

One of America’s leading undergraduate teaching institutions — consistently ranked in the top 25 by U.S. News and World Report — Notre Dame also has been at the forefront of research and scholarship. The aerodynamics of glider flight, the transmission of wireless messages, and the formulae for synthetic rubber were pioneered at the University. Today, researchers are achieving breakthroughs in astrophysics, radiation chemistry, environmental sciences, tropical disease transmission, peace studies, cancer, robotics, and nanoelectronics.

Notre Dame research happens everywhere. Notre Dame’s campus also houses a state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility, seven particle accelerators, an expansive museum collection, and a cutting-edge 400,000-square-foot complex dedicated to science and engineering research. Notre Dame research is also taking place in dozens of countries around the world and even aboard the International Space Station.

Notre Dame Research supports and encourages innovation in thirty core facilities and resources, as well as in a number of key areas of research, including cancer, data and AI, ethics, global health, propulsion, and more. In FY25, Notre Dame received $218 million in external research awards.

Notre Dame is also a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), a select group of 71 leading American research universities. AAU member universities collectively help shape policy for higher education, science, and innovation; promote best practices in undergraduate and graduate education; and strengthen the contributions of leading research universities to American society.

Notre Dame’s 1,250 acre campus includes several recognizable buildings, including the Main Building, or “Golden Dome,” the World of Life mural (“Touchdown Jesus”), and the Notre Dame Stadium. In addition to its landmark campus in South Bend, Indiana, which is regularly named as one of the world’s most beautiful campuses, it has a significant international presence, including global locations in Dublin, London, Mumbai, Rome, Santiago, and more.
