LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- LI-COR(R) Biosciences is offering two million dollars in a Genomics Education Matching Fund program (GEMF) to help undergraduate colleges and high schools establish or enhance their programs in genomic studies. The GEMF program is to be used to acquire LI-COR DNA sequencing systems and software for use by students studying molecular biology and related fields.
This is the second year for the program. LI-COR awarded $1.25 million in GEMF funds during 2004 to colleges, technical schools and high schools in the United States.
“It is our goal to help the scientists of the future to have access to this technology,” says Bill Biggs, LI-COR president and CEO. “This program helps institutions enhance their programs in genomic education with practical, hands-on experience in molecular biology.”
LI-COR genomic analysis systems are used in academic labs and colleges worldwide for a variety of research applications including sequencing, microsatellites, AFLP(R), SNP discovery, and reverse genetics research.
LI-COR will award grants to eligible institutions on a matching funds basis during 2005. Eligible institutions must demonstrate how they will incorporate the LI-COR DNA analysis system to teach undergraduate or high school students. Additionally, schools may use the instruments for faculty and student research programs. Complete information on how schools may apply for a grant is available at http://www.licor.com/gemf. Deadline for submission of grant requests is March 1st, 2005.
