Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company committed to improving the lives of people with cancer. Our lead product is Nexavar® (sorafenib) tablets, a novel, oral multiple kinase inhibitor that targets proteins involved in both tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels to support cancer cell growth). This product is being developed and marketed in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals.
Nexavar is approved in more than 70 countries worldwide for the treatment of patients with advanced kidney cancer, and in more than 40 countries for the treatment of patients with liver cancer. As part of a broad development program, Nexavar is also currently being evaluated in randomized trials in non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, and other cancers. We also have a small molecule cell cycle inhibitor in clinical testing that resulted from a collaboration with Pfizer, which is responsible for developing the drug.
According to the collaboration agreement for Nexavar, Onyx funds half of the development costs for Nexavar worldwide, except in Japan. In the U.S., Bayer and Onyx share sales and marketing responsibilities, and will share equally in any resulting profits. Everywhere else in the world, Onyx also shares profits, although Bayer has exclusive marketing responsibilities. In Japan, Bayer funds all product development, and Onyx receives a single-digit royalty on sales. For the cell cycle inhibitor, Pfizer is managing and funding all product development activities, and Onyx will receive a single-digit royalty on any sales.
Onyx Pharmaceuticals was founded by Frank McCormick, Ph.D., F.R.S., an internationally recognized scientist and currently the Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and Cancer Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.
Onyx common stock is traded on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol ONXX.
