GSK is a science-led global healthcare company which researches and develops a broad range of innovative products in three primary areas of Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Consumer Healthcare. Approximately 500 GSK employees work in two sites in Rockville, Maryland, outside Washington, D.C. The company’s biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility is part of GSK Global Manufacturing and Supply (GMS), which makes biopharmaceutical drug substance for clinical trials and commercial use. The Rockville biopharm site consists of two FDA-licensed facilities for large and small scale manufacturing with 120,000 ft2 of cGMP production space and a total footprint of 420,000 ft2. The site manufactures products approved for the treatment of Lupus, severe asthma and inhalation anthrax, and makes drug substances for other companies as a third party contract manufacturer (CMO). This manufacturing site became GSK in 2012, when the company acquired Human Genome Sciences, which was founded in Rockville in 1992. Newer to the area and growing rapidly is GSK’s U.S. Vaccines R&D Center, a state-of-the-art facility at the forefront of vaccine research and development, combating some of the most important diseases known to man and addressing the medical needs of people of all ages around the world. The center moved to Rockville in 2016.
