About University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne has been a vital part of Australia's higher education and research for 150 years. It has eleven faculties covering the professional disciplines as well as the humanities and the sciences.With a student population of over 38,000, the University of Melbourne is home to nearly 8,000 international students coming from more than 100 countries. Over 2,500 teaching and research staff supports our students.
The University has produced some of the world's most innovative, forward thinking and successful academics and professionals. Many of its graduates have achieved distinguished careers in the professions, politics, sciences and the arts in Australia and around the world. These include two Nobel Prize winners in Medicine; Sir Macfarlane Burnet for his contribution to immunology, and Sir John Eccles for his contribution to neuroscience.
The Eminent Scholars Scheme seeks to attract the highest calibre of researchers and scholars to the University to enhance the teaching and research environment. Currently two Nobel Laureates, Professor Peter Doherty and Professor Bert Sakmann, are on staff.
The University is committed to taking a leadership role in research and education in collaboration with the biotech industry. The main campus is located in Parkville - the major centre in Australia for medical and bio-scientific research, education, clinical practice and production of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products for clinical trials. This area is home to 2,000 researchers, 12 research institutes, 8 hospitals and 8 major industrial companies and will soon include the new Bio21 complex.
The State of Victoria regards biotechnology as one of the keys to its future prosperity. Through substantial financial commitment the State Government supports the development and commercialisation of biotechnology research as part of its drive to establish Victoria as one of the leaders in the new global 'knowledge economy'. Research Centres The University of Melbourne is a research driven institution. In terms of research expenditure the University is the largest research organization in Australia after the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Research conducted in more than 100 research centres combined with internationally recognised staff, informs both the teaching and values of the University. Research Degrees The University offers postgraduate research degrees at the Masters level and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
