Overview

Established in 1908, Swinburne University of Technology is a public institution delivering a wide range of tertiary programs from pre-University courses through to Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research-level study. With six campuses across cosmopolitan Melbourne as well as an international campus in Sarawak, Malaysia, Swinburne offers world-class education in Applied and Industrial Science, Business, Innovation and Management, Design, Computing and Information Technology, Engineering and Technology, Film and Television, Hospitality and Tourism Health and Human Services Multimedia, Social Sciences and Arts and Visual and Performing Arts.

Swinburne is also home to a number of internationally regarded specialist research centres, such as the Brain Sciences Institute, Graduate School of Integrative Medicine, the Industrial Research Institute Swinburne (IRIS) and the Environment and Biotechnology Centre.

Swinburne welcomes international students, with a current enrolment of over 3,000 international students from over 50 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and the Middle East.

Biotechnology Programs and Research

Swinburne offers a three-year Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) program, as well as Double Degrees incorporating Business and Arts. These courses include the studies of bioethics, proteomics, gene therapy, genetically modified foods, bioremediation, protein engineering, immunology, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, drug and vaccine design, biomolecular arrays, stem cell therapy and bioinformatics.

Swinburne also offers a range of research opportunities at Masters and PhD level for graduate students in a range of Biotechnology and Bioengineering fields. Specific areas of current research include:

  • Bioremediation of plastic films
  • Assessment of the surface and colloid science properties of biological colloids
  • Extraction of bioactive compounds from natural sources (plants and fungi)
  • Chemical biocatalysis
  • Improvement of water quality by using biocolloids as adsorbents of heavy metals
  • Development of biomolecular static and dynamic devices
  • Analysis of genetic variation of rotavirus isolates
  • Cellular engineering on ordered artificial structures
  • Biostatistics and bioinformatics
  • Enzymatic de-inking of recycled paper
  • Development of novel drug-delivery systems
