Vaxcyte is seeking a talented and experienced Scientist I to join the Upstream Process Development group within the Protein Development and CMC team. This is an exciting opportunity to join an outstanding team with a mission to establish a new bacterial fermentation development lab and pilot plant at Vaxcyte.
The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualities:              
· Hands-on experience executing primary recovery experiments for bioreactor processes at benchtop and/or pilot scale.
· A clear communicator with strong organizational and planning skills.
· A team player who works seamlessly with others, speaks up, and remains focused on achieving the best results to achieve company goals.
Essential Functions:
    • Lead laboratory activities related to benchtop scale primary recovery experiments for cell free protein synthesis.
    • Lead development of primary recovery scale-up/down models to support technology transfer and manufacturing activities.
    • Generate and analyze experimental data and present results at internal project meetings.
    • Take an active role in technical documentation initiatives, including authorship of SOPs, technical reports, and ELN and database management.

    • BS in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline with 6+ years of relevant Pharma/Biotech industry experience, or MS with 4+ years of relevant Pharma/Biotech industry experience, or PhD with 0+ years of Pharma/Biotech industry experience but relevant academic experience.
    • Hands-on experience in primary recovery unit operations such as homogenization, continuous centrifugation, and depth filtration.
    • Experience with fermentation and bioreactor operation a plus.
    • Familiarity with DoE (Design of Experiments) principles and software.
    • Familiarity with regulatory requirements of biotherapeutics. Late-stage process characterization experience is a plus.
    • Eagerness and ability to learn and understand new concepts.

Reports to: Senior Scientist, Upstream Development, Protein Development and Manufacturing
Location: San Carlos, CA
The compensation package will be competitive and includes comprehensive benefits and an equity component.
Salary Range: $125,000 – $130,000


Vaxcyte, Inc.
