Sage is seeking an enterprise-wide thinker and collaborator to lead postpartum depression (PPD) communications for its portfolio of products, including ZURZUVAETM, the first and only oral product approved by the FDA specifically for postpartum depression (PPD); and ZULRESSO TM, an injectable treatment administered continuously by intravenous infusion.

The Director, Commercial Product Communications, PPD will report into the Executive Director, Program and Commercial Communications and be a trusted business partner and adviser on ZURZUVAE brand teams and cross-functional communications subteams. The right candidate has experience navigating commercial-stage organizations and shares Sages holistic view of product communications, which includes strategic planning and execution, multi-stakeholder engagement and alignment, traditional and social media strategy and execution, issues management, and brand storytelling.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead development and execution of integrated ZURZUVAE communications plans to support ZURZUVAE launch and achievement of business objectives.
  • Engage regularly with colleagues within Corporate Communications (Social Media & Corporate Brand Storytelling); across External Affairs (Patient Engagement & Advocacy and Government Affairs); and cross-functionally in Employee Communications, Market Access, Medical Affairs, HEOR, Legal, Regulatory and Investor Relations to understand each functions objectives and drive an aligned approach to product communications and stakeholder message harmonization.
  • Engage regularly with alliance partner (Biogen) to drive strategic and tactical alignment across ZURZUVAE communications planning and activities.
  • Partner with the Executive Director to co-lead the cross-functional Integrated Communications Team (ICT) for ZURZUVAE (a subteam of the ZURZUVAE Program Team): make agenda recommendations, ask clarifying questions, and take initiative to lead development of integrated plans.
  • Manage Agency partner to ensure external communications activities drive business value, adhere to regulatory and legal guidelines, and are delivered within the allocated budget.
  • Partner with colleagues to secure assets for communication activations, such as third-party spokespeople (KOLs, patients, advocates).
  • Build and maintain positive professional relationships with reporters covering consumer health and the biotech and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Promptly respond to and manage ZURZUVAE media opportunities: identify risks, make recommendations and gain consensus on the path forward.
  • Advise and prepare Sage executives and brand spokespeople (i.e. HCPS, patients, advocates) for PPD-focused media interviews.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and the ZURZUVAE Program and Brand Teams to identify, monitor and mitigate risks that may become issues with the potential to impact how ZURZUVAE is perceived by key stakeholders, including payers, providers, and patients.
  • Provide counsel on and align external and internal communication strategies, approaches and messaging; lead cross-functional discussions on communication implications, driving consensus and alignment on the path forward.
  • Responsible for development, maintenance and approval of ZURZUVAE communications materials, including the ZURZUVAE narrative, scenario plans, press releases, holding statements, Q&A documents, presentations, fact sheets, video scripts, speeches, media assets, and briefing documents.
  • Manage the internal review process for external PR communications materials, including management of Veeva submissions.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, ability to proactively anticipate and identify issues and raise to key stakeholders to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations. Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action; excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

Basic Requirements

  • 8+ years of combined experience working within the biotech/pharmaceutical and communications industry, with 4+ years working in-house supporting cross-functional teams, especially marketing teams.
  • Strong commercial/marketing knowledge and experience developing communications strategies and tactical execution to support the business needs and drive ROI for late-stage and commercialized medicines.
  • Commercial launch experience while working in an in-house marketing or communications role. Strong writer and facilitator with an understanding of the late-stage pharmaceutical drug development and commercialization process.

Preferred Requirements

  • 10+ years of combined experience working within the biotech/pharmaceutical and communications industry with 4+ years of working in-house role supporting cross-functional teams, especially marketing teams.
  • Skilled at interacting with senior leaders at a public biotech/pharmaceutical company and working successfully with cross-functional partners and key stakeholders (e.g., commercial, medical, legal/regulatory, government relations).
  • Ability to process, interpret and communicate scientific data.
  • Capable of enterprise-wide thinking, stakeholder perspective-taking and public speaking.
  • High degree of professionalism, maturity, agility, ownership of responsibilities, business understanding and organizational awareness.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.
  • Proven results in building and effectively implementing branded PR initiatives for prescription drugs; experience in mental health, central nervous system disorders, womens health or PPD.
  • A deep understanding of the mental health and womens health landscape.
  • Working knowledge of FDA regulations as applied to the communication of investigational and marketed drugs; familiarity with drug industry reimbursement; and a good understanding of public policy challenges currently affecting the healthcare industry.

Benefits and Compensation The base salary hiring range for this position is $165,002 - $226,877.*
  • The actual salary offered within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, education, skills, and performance.
  • This position is eligible to participate in the Companys annual bonus plan; the bonus varies based on performance and is subject to the standard terms and conditions of the incentive program.
