About the role:

Become an integral member of a collaborative team dedicated to supporting scientific research. The Gladstone Institutes, a nonprofit biomedical research organization located in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a responsible, resourceful, and team-oriented individual to join its Information Technology Department as a System Administrator. (This position is full-time, with hybrid on-site/off-site requirements.)

The System Administrator provides IT system administration and brings broad technology experience to the IT team to help enhance the support provided to Gladstone’s researchers, particularly its scientific computing infrastructure. This includes the design, implementation, and support of a wide variety of computing and storage solutions, both on-premise and cloud-based. The System Administrator is part of Gladstone’s IT Infrastructure team and works closely with the wider Gladstone IT team in a highly collaborative environment.

What you will do:

  • Work directly with scientists to ensure they have the computing infrastructure they require

  • Troubleshoot issues related to computational servers and scientific data storage

  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to users of Gladstone’s computing systems

  • Manage and secure technology solutions, including: servers, storage, virtualization, switches, firewalls, and cloud-based systems

  • Propose and implement system enhancements (hardware and software) to improve system performance and reliability

  • Actively monitor system performance and logs

  • Develop system documentation and SOPs

  • Contribute to Tier 3 support

  • Participate in team on-call rotation

  • Other related tasks and duties as assigned

What you will need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other related discipline

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in systems administration

  • Strong expertise in supporting Linux compute environments

  • Demonstrated expertise in scripting and automation (bash, csh, Python)

  • Experience supporting scientific computing (GPU cluster experience a big plus)

  • Experience in configuring and maintaining storage solutions (Isilon/Powerscale a plus)

  • Experience with administering cloud-based compute and storage solutions (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Solid understanding of networking principles (hands-on experience with Juniper a plus)

  • Experience managing identity services (Okta, Active Directory)

  • In-depth understanding of network security, firewalls, VPNs, and data encryption

  • Experience with hands-on physical configuration and troubleshooting of hardware a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in large projects, and to contribute to an active intellectual environment

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Exemplary attention to detail, especially when it comes to documentation

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

  • A passion for supporting cutting-edge science

  • High level of professionalism and accountability

System Admin III-$117K-$150KSr. System Admin:$135K-$170K
