Job Details

The Genomic Research Center Computational Oncology group (GRC-CO) at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated computational biologist to play an integral role in a multi-disciplinary team focused on developing new therapies and approaches for cancer treatment. AbbVie’s GRC is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics and pharmacogenomics. The GRC works across all R&D including discovery and clinical development, and multiple areas such as process sciences, global epidemiology, search and evaluation, and corporate strategy.

This position is based at AbbVie’s brand-new CA headquarters located in South San Francisco, CA.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to advance potentially curative therapies into the clinic by collaborating with development teams on novel immuno-oncology assets and by pioneering new perspectives of cancer through analysis of large-scale human cancer datasets. They will be responsible for working with project teams as a bioinformatics colleague, facilitating preclinical experimental design and interpretation, interrogation of large-scale data for mechanistic and biomarker insights, coordinating research activities across multiple team members, and formulating a data-driven foundation for patient and indication prioritization in the clinic. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving novel research into patient subpopulations, novel target discovery, and/or clinical features of oncology treatment.  They will also play a critical role supporting the development of the next generation of oncology therapies, specifically programs involved in the AbbVie-Calico collaboration

  • Work with diverse project teams to analyze preclinical and clinical data to inform program development; identify program critical questions and help design solutions.
  • Interrogate large scale multiplatform ‘omics data to define relationships between cancer immune ecosystems and patient survival. Identify targetable subpopulations, combination opportunities, and/or novel targets for subsequent development.
  • Coordinate research activities within the AbbVie computational IO team and our computational colleagues across the AbbVie-Calico collaboration. Lead a small team in support of oncology program research; plan research activities, delegate appropriately, and manage effectively.
  • Bring together disparate data types in compelling visualization packages that provide colleagues with the ability to see both the overall landscape and granular details leading to improved decision-making.
  • Collaborate effectively across disciplinary and company boundaries as a member of the AbbVie-Calico collaboration. Capitalize on the unique strengths of both organizations to provide data-driven insights into immuno-oncology drug development.

  • Qualifications:

  • PhD. Degree in bioinformatics, statistics, computational biology, genomics or a related field; Master’s degree with typically 8 years of experience; Bachelor’s degree with typically 10 years of experience
  • Expertise in at least one general purpose programming/data science languages including but not limited to R, Python, Julia.
  • Expertise with common NGS data processing tools and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in cancer genomics.
  • Strong communication skills to foster collaboration in cross-functional teams

    ·       In-depth understanding of technologies related to high-throughput experimental techniques, such as next generation sequencing technologies, single cell platforms, proteomics, microarray platforms, and their applications.

    ·       Familiarity with the development of visualizations and interactive figures communicating complex genomic and clinical data.

    ·       Operational and/or developmental familiarity with containers for deploying standard pipelines (Docker, AWS Container, Singularity, etc.)

    ·       Experience with oncology in both the preclinical and clinical stage are highly valued.

    ·       Familiarity with immuno-oncology concepts, the research space, and treatment landscape.

    ·       A collaborative and self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work in a dynamic environment and able to manage multiple objectives in parallel and adapt to changing priorities.

    ·       Experience as a team lead, prioritizing research activities and delegating appropriately, is also highly prioritized.
