The Role

In this role, you will play a key role in advancing the next generation sequencing (NGS) testing capabilities at Moderna by developing and implementing cutting-edge analysis methods and automations to support high-throughput sequencing activities. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to leverage novel computational approaches and advanced data science toolkits to unlock valuable insights from large-scale sequencing data and ensure the data quality in a HT fashion. The Scientist will serve as a NGS and Bioinformatics expert, and mentor to junior associates. The ideal candidate brings extensive hands-on experience of establishing, improving, optimizing, and maintaining streamline workflow of novel and traditional sequencing analyses in the Sequence Testing Center at Moderna.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Independently research, design and optimize NGS analysis pipelines across diverse sequencing platforms.

  • Design, implementing and maintaining cloud based bioinformatic/statistical data analysis pipelines, ensuring scalability and efficient data analysis.

  • Mentor and guide associates on cutting-edge and traditional sequencing methods, providing technical expertise and fostering their professional growth.

  • Review data generated by associates within group and provide feedback and guidance.

  • Lead the critical analysis and interpretation of complex datasets, developing models to represent key findings.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot technical challenges and deliver data on tight timelines.

  • Ensure integrity of deliverables; provide scientific methodology input to meet discovery project objectives and regulatory requirements.

  • Take ownership of project success and ensure timely delivery of high-quality results.

  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in NGS technologies and data analysis methods, actively contributing to the continuous improvement of our scientific platform.

Heres What Youll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree in Computational Biology, Genetics, Genomics, or Computer Science, Data Science related fields with current understanding of life sciences applications.

  • Ph.D. or MS with 5+ years or BS with 8+ years of experience in sequencing analysis, industry experience preferred.

  • Expertise in programming (Python and/or R) and cloud computing environment (AWS)

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • A strong working knowledge of Python and associated bioinformatics packages, with a particular focus on low frequency mutation detection methods for NGS datasets. Hands on experience troubleshooting and maintaining Python based sequence QC and contamination check pipelines.

  • A broad understanding of sequencing technologies and the methodologies for the analysis of resultant data. Experience with various cloud-based platforms (e.g. AWS/S3/Benchling/DNAnexus) a plus.

  • Experience with Docker images.

  • Strong written and verbal scientific and technical communication skills

  • Experience of leading agile and complex projects in a collaborative industry setting

  • Commitment to operational excellence and innovation

  • Effective time management, organization, and planning skills

  • Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping skills

  • Self-starter with a can do attitude

  • Capable to quickly adapt to changing priorities and thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial setting
