Job Description

Executive Director, Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, HIV

Reporting to the VP of Public Affairs, Global Therapeutic Area Communications, this role will lead global communications about Gilead's research and development efforts and future product portfolio across therapeutic areas in virology (HIV, Viral Hepatitis and COVID-19). Managing the global therapeutic area team for HIV, the role is responsible for helping to maintain and build upon Gilead's position as a leader by articulating Gilead's vision in the HIV therapeutic area across external and internal audiences, raising awareness of unmet medical needs that our science and programs seek to address, and communicating progress against these goals. This role works closely with therapeutic area leads in Global Commercial Product Strategy, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs and Government Affairs, and engages colleagues across Public Affairs' global centers of expertise and regional/country teams to help inform cross-functional priorities and drive tailored implementation at a local level.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team to drive global communications about Gilead's HIV portfolio and pipeline (Franchise, Treatment, Prevention and Cure). Set a vision and priorities for the team, provide direction as well as hands-on support as needed, and ensure team members have development opportunities and continue to grow in their careers at Gilead

  • Engage with leaders in Global Commercial Product Strategy, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs and Government Affairs to help drive cross-functional strategy and tactical plans that assert Gilead's longstanding leadership in and commitment to viral diseases

  • Integrate information from across the organization to ensure comprehensive narratives on Gilead's work in the HIV therapeutic area can be communicated across external and internal audiences in a compelling and consistent way

  • Lead cross-functional efforts to horizon scan and proactively address emerging issues, with an important focus on the policy / political environment

  • Design and implement disease awareness programs that inform and mobilize people living with viral diseases, encourage at-risk individuals to engage in care, and help to de-stigmatize diseases among the general public

  • Support ongoing and pending product launches around the world, with globally aligned messages and outreach

  • Inform priorities, collaborate on programs and ensure integrated cross-functional execution related to the HIV therapeutic areas in other Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, media relations, health equity, community engagement and corporate giving. Programs may include corporate advertising, corporate website and intranet content development, advocacy group engagement, funding opportunity announcements, among others

  • Maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade reporters to shape reporting on Gilead's virology product portfolio, pipeline and patient support

  • Manage PR agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead's business conduct policies

  • Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 16+ years of relevant experience, which includes 14 years of healthcare public relations experience or 14 years of relevant experience with a master's degree or PhD.

  • Demonstrated experience driving communications plans that support business priorities

  • Experience leading teams and supporting both team performance and individual team members' development

  • Expertise in media relations and issues management

  • Ability to interact with senior management, academic experts and patient advocates appropriately, with confidence and ease

  • Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams

  • A passion for engaging in public health and policy issues

  • Prior experience in HIV and/or viral hepatitis communications, advocacy, government affairs, marketing or medical affairs is required

  • Experience working outside of the US is required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company

The salary range for this position is: $274,635.00 - $355,410.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
