Job Description

Sr. Finance Manager - R&D Finance FP&A, Development Functions
Gilead Sciences is looking for a Sr. Finance Manager to join the R&D Finance FP&A, Development Functions team in Foster City, CA. This role is a combination of financial planning, analysis, and business partnering. The Sr. Finance Manager reports to the Dev Functions Finance Head and works closely together with an Associate Director to support 3 Development Functions in scope: Clinical Data Sciences, Biomarker Sciences & Clinical Pharmacology, and Program Strategy & Management Operations.

In this role you will partner closely with the business to help execute their mission and associated budgets by supporting investment prioritization and optimal resourcing. You will be a part of a global team that drives financial planning processes, generates insights and reporting, performs month-end close, actively manages risks and opportunities, and leads scenario planning and resource management. As a member of a matrix organization, you will lead process improvement initiatives within your organization and R&D Finance, as well as influence key initiatives within Development Functions.

What You Will Do:
  • Establishing strong business partnerships with business stakeholders to provide comprehensive financial support.
  • Leading planning and month-end close cycles for the respective functional areas, ensuring accuracy and streamlined processes.
  • Managing the delivery of accurate and timely management reporting including functional expenses and resource reporting.
  • Driving the development of meaningful financial insights and creating effective presentations to communicate conclusions and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Conducting financial and resource modeling to support tactical and strategic decision making (e.g., business case development, cost analysis, and sensitivity analysis).
  • Driving the development and implementation of key process improvement initiatives including proactively engaging with Finance colleagues and business partners.
  • Providing advice and training to business partners on improvements to budget management.
  • Leading, executing, or supporting various ad hoc projects/initiatives within Finance and business network.

The Key Competencies for This Candidate Are:

  • Excellent communication skills: ability to tailor messages to various audiences, oscillating between detail and big picture to tell the executive level story.
  • Strong business partnership skills: ability to build rapport and credibility with business stakeholders and effectively manage expectations with stakeholders of all levels in the Business and within Finance
  • Business savviness and financial acumen: technical knowledge on analytics, business foresight, problem-solving skills, and ability to translate ambiguity to clarity.
  • Results orientation: ability to deliver results and a strong drive to meet and exceed goals; willingness to take ownership of recommendations and to make sound decisions.
  • Continuous improvement approach: proactively generate and translate ideas to action to drive an improvement; ability to challenge the status quo.
  • Self-starter with initiative and drive.

Knowledge and Experience:
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in FP&A, having held positions of increasing scope and responsibility. 6+ years of experience with an MBA degree.
  • Experience with Month-End Close activities and Management Reporting (e.g., Journal Entry Preparation, Analysis, Commentary, Budget-vs-Actuals Reporting).
  • Experience in Financial Planning (e.g., Budgeting / Forecasting) processes across Operating Expenses (OPEX), Headcount (HC) management and a grasp of forecasting methods and techniques.
  • Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint with familiarity of SAP, SAC-P, and Analysis for Office a plus.
  • BS/BA is required, MBA or CPA is a plus.
  • Experience in R&D Finance, biotech, or pharmaceuticals industry a plus, but not required.

The salary range for this position is: $154,020.00 - $199,320.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
