Job Description

The Senior Finance Manager serves as the Finance partner to the Global Development functions and supports key development programs at Zai.

Lead financial planning and management for the Discovery function:

  • Work closely with Discovery leadership to prepare annual and long range (3 years) budget, including identifying key investments and programs, for review with Discovery and Finance leadership
  • Support monthly/quarter department budget forecast as necessary, including timely update of program progress and Discovery support for programs in clinical development
  • Prepare annual Discovery capital plan; monitor purchasing/acquisition and implementation, and liaise with Accounting to properly report CIP/PPE on BS

Lead strategic financial planning for Development Functions and Portfolio Programs:

  • Manage annual and long range financial forecast through partnership with Functions and Program Management including key investment
  • Develop an understanding of clinical development programs, including timelines, clinical and regulatory milestones, risks and commercial potential to articulate program’s value and support portfolio prioritization
  • Work closely with ZPT's (Zai Program Teams) to develop/update project budget in alignment with clinical development plan (CDP) in Planisware

Drive execution to maximize value of budget

  • Prepare monthly reports focusing on analysis of spend drivers and key variance, develop tools to enable execution to budget, and update monthly forecast for R&D functions
  • Ensure a timely and accurate month end closing process, and ensure proper recognition of expense, including in-progress activities and trial cost, with adherence to proper GAAP standard

Build relationships with business and department leaders – be the Finance face to the R&D functions, ZPTs and external collaborators

  • Represent Zai/Support as JFC for partnered programs
  • Support relationships with Corporate FP&A functions, internal/external auditors if/when needed

Provide ad hoc analysis or supports as necessary



  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or related field required with eight years progressive FP&A experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and other MS Office software
  • Able to work global hours (with US, China and Middle East-based colleagues)


  • MBA
  • Biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail essential
  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented
  • Able to think creatively, and to understand complex business dynamics while maintaining compliance
  • Experience in a start-up, roll-up-your-sleeves environment
  • Fluency in Mandarin

Additional Information

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $160K and $180K/year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
