Job Details

We are seeking a protein purification scientist to be part of a well-integrated discovery team. As a member AbbVie’s Biologics Discovery Sciences, you will play a key role in the production and characterization of antibody-based molecules and collaborate with Oncology Discovery scientists to deliver differentiated best-in-class biologics. The candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with an established track record in biochemistry, protein production, and biotherapeutic characterization. The successful candidate will be expected to work with other scientists within BDS, across functions and different therapeutic areas (Virology, Neurosciences, Immunology and Oncology) to discover and develop next generation biologics through engineering and interrogation of protein attributes. This position is based at our brand new state-of-the-art South San Francisco campus.

-          Understand and execute processes for the expression, purification, and characterization of protein biotherapeutics.

-          Plan experimental approaches with minor supervisory guidance.  Discuss, troubleshoot, recommend, and modify experimental techniques as needed.

-          Collaborate cross-department to come up with the most effective approach to meet the demands of biologic development

-          Champion new technologies to achieve project goals.

-          Communicate within our production team and actively engage with discovery scientists, development colleagues, collaborators, and outside vendors.

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.

-          A proven record of success in the expression, purification, and characterization of mammalian proteins, including antibodies, antibody fragments, and novel protein constructs.

-          Proficiency in the use of various chromatography and purification systems (protein A/G, AEX, SEC, mixed-mode with AKTA systems), and analytical instruments (Agilent HPLC, Waters UPLC and LC/MS, CE-SDS, SDS-PAGE)

-          Independently perform and review LC-MS analyses to provide sequence verification, post-translational modification profiles, and DLP profiles.

-          Demonstrated ability to enhance protein production capabilities through identification of key technology improvements, innovation, and problem solving.

-          Programming and operation of liquid handling systems (Hamilton Vantage, AssayMap Bravo) for high-throughput production to support the biologics discovery process.

-          Ability to perform complex data capture, analysis, screening, and hit selection to advance optimal biologics with superior DLP.

-          Experience working in a highly collaborative environment and the ability to work with others to set and meet organizational goals.

-          Experience with antibody engineering and optimization (e.g., humanization, Fc optimization, drug-like properties)

-          Familiarity with sequence analysis tools (Vector NTI, Geneious, Genedata)

-          Experience with mammalian cell culture and transfection
