The Role:

The Moderna Research Co-op program is a 6-month experiential training program for students currently working towards an undergraduate or advanced degree in life sciences. During the co-op you will learn about the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and gain valuable hands-on experience in one of the most bold and relentless companies currently leading the field in mRNA-LNP science. You will work under the supervision of an experienced Moderna team member and have opportunities for cross-team collaboration, networking, and mentorship. You will develop laboratory skills and learn about lab safety, experimental design, scientific strategy, and record keeping.

Our winter/spring co-op program is from January 16th June 14th, 2024. All applicants must be available for the entire duration of the program.

Heres What Youll Do:

Infectious Diseases: Be part of the team responsible for advancing vaccine candidates from discovery to clinical trials and work within a specific focus within the Infectious Disease team on, Antigen Design & Selection: The overarching goal of Antigen Design & Selection is to rationally design and select antigen variants that have the highest chance of success in clinical trials. This overall goal can be achieved by combining the powers of 1) Structural biology and structure-based antigen design, 2) Protein production and purification, 3) Antigen screening and characterization, and 4) Bioinformatics analysis and computation-aided designs. We are seeking co-ops to have direct exposure to Structure Biology and Antigen screening and characterization.

  • With guidance, execute protein and cell-based assays (Flow cytometry, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot

  • Culture mammalian cell lines for downstream applications

  • Collaborate with direct team members to translate and transition new assays (cellular, biochemical, and biophysical) to an automated platform.

  • Collaborate with direct team members to optimize existing automated workflows

  • Utilize an ELN to capture experimental results and participate in LIMS integration.

  • Assist in reagent ordering and inventory and design of new automation equipment.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or advanced degree program in biomedical sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology), or bioengineering or similar.

  • Basic knowledge of basic lab procedures (such as pipetting) required

  • Technical experience in any of the following areas desired: cell/tissue culture, transfections, protein purification (affinity chromatography and size-exclusion chromatography), protein analytics (SDS-PAGE), protein detection methods (e.g., MSD, ELISA), molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA extractions), cell characterization (e.g., flow cytometry), assay development and troubleshooting, structural biology methodologies (x-ray crystallography and electron microscopy).

  • Prior co-op or internship experience is preferred but not required

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and possess the desire to drive a project to completion. Flexible and capable of working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
