Reporting to the VP of Engineering Excellence, the Sr. Director, Engineering Excellence, will join an organization at the core of transforming Modernas enterprise service-oriented architecture and software development practices. What we are delivering impacts every system and every builder at the company. Engineering Excellence (EE) consists of Builder Tools & Platforms (BT&P), Attribution Services, Monitoring & Alarming, Incident Management, and the Voice of The Builder organizations. You will span all of these domains to provide technical guidance, raise the bar for quality, with an emphasis on automation, applying AI, extensibility and futureproofing. Together the EE organization is fundamentally revolutionizing the way services are built, deployed, accounted for and owned, monitored and managed. We are building from the ground up to deliver foundational services that ensure quality from step zero, eliminate undifferentiated work for builders, prevent tech-debt from being (re)introduced to our systems. Your work will ensure the platforms and capabilities delivered by each EE domain are of the highest standard, that together they provide compounding value, and that they create enablement for initiatives and roadmaps inside of Cyber Security, Compliance, Cloud & Digital Infrastructure, Commercial, R&D, and Manufacturing.
This role will be based in our Seattle, WA office and offers flexibility to work remotely 30% of the time. Candidates must be based in, or willing to relocate to, the greater Seattle area. Given our high level of collaboration and fast pace, this role is not able to be remote. In addition, this role will travel to other offices as we continue to expand Modernas technology footprint.
Heres What Youll Do
Deliver vision-lead strategy, architecture and design artifacts, and executive status reports regarding the roadmap of our enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture.
Directly influence prioritization of initiatives with far-reaching builder productivity, security, and compliance implications.
Define engineering standards and policy, and design mechanisms that codify them into default builder patterns or constructs.
Facilitate tough business and technical tradeoffs across multiple domains and properties to promote long-term value through architectural coherence.
Defragment our environment and promote scalability with authoritative sources of truth, singular front doors, and common services that solve common challenges experienced by every builder in the company.
Bounce between tactical execution and implementation, and strategic thought leadership. The first half of an average day might look something like leading design sessions with Jr. Engineers one hour, presenting our monitoring strategy to the Executive Leadership Team the next, then participating in the Identity and Access Management steering committee meeting.
Put build-first, product and product owner mindsets on display and foster these mindsets in engineering teams across the company.
Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelors degree in a math or science discipline with 10+ years of relevant job experience or a Masters degree in match or science discipline with 6+ years of relevant job experience
Dynamic range both (tactically and strategically) of technical domains spanning security, build systems, asset discovery and management, asset ownership attribution, incident management / response.
Demonstrated ability to articulate enterprise architecture strategy and vision.
Demonstrated ability to deliver and / or dramatically improve the scalability and performance of systems.
Demonstrated ability to influence the roadmaps and priorities of peer organizations.
Demonstrated ability to broker and receive executive sponsorship of far-reaching initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to build and pilot prototype solutions.

Under Washington State law, Moderna is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for the jobs covered by this description. Base compensation for these positions in Washington State range from $182,000 to $327,000. Actual salary determinations will take into account factors such as work location, prior education and experience, job-related knowledge, and demonstrated skills. Compensation decisions are made on the facts and circumstances of each case.
