Job Details

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We’re looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

The Diabetes, Obesity and Complications Therapeutic Area (DOCTA) of Eli Lilly and Company focuses on the discovery of biologic, small molecule and oligonucleotide therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes, obesity and associated metabolic disorders. The Obesity research component of DOCTA based in Boston is seeking a motivated scientist possessing a strong background in cell biology, physiology, and/or pharmacology with demonstrated capacity to develop and lead an in vitro and cell-based assay platform and strategy. The successful candidate will devise and implement studies in primary and immortalized cells to identify and validate novel targets, elucidate mechanism of action and support development/SAR of potential new medicines. Industrial experience leading and working within cross-functional/matrixed teams is imperative. Ultimately, this role will be critical to supporting discovery efforts and established pipeline projects within anti-obesity therapeutics.

Do you have the experience we are looking for? Apply today to join the Lilly team!

Responsibilities:
  • Provide strong scientific and technical leadership to drive discovery research, assess new targets and generate and test hypotheses relevant for therapeutic approaches to treat metabolic diseases with an emphasis on obesity.
  • Be hands-on in the laboratory to build or develop innovative research capabilities to expand the scope of the group’s impact.
  • Function independently, work within a team-oriented lab environment and work within cross-functional project teams.
  • Direct and indirect management of lab-based scientists, with expectations around useful feedback, performance evaluation and career development.
  • Establishing credibility and visibility through authorship and/or presentation of important scientific contributions at key conferences and in impactful journals.
  • Contribute to the generation of short- and long-term strategic goals, defining successful outcomes and ensuring the effective growth of the Boston DOCTA organization to meet these goals.
  • Commissioning work through third party organizations and spearheading collaborations outside of Lilly to ensure department goals are appropriately supported and resourced.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, or a closely related field
  • 2+ years of postdoctoral training and 8+ years of industry experience or 10+ years of equivalent experience in an academic setting
Additional Skills/Preferences:
  • Significant experience in and familiarity with the drug development process, with demonstrated contributions either at preclinical and/or clinical stage highlighting comprehension of key drivers of drug development.
  • Broad technical experience in biochemistry and cell and molecular biology with the ability to implement appropriate instrumentation, coordinate and implement meticulous experiments, interpret and communicate data output, and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Proven expertise in building disease-relevant cellular assays for metabolic, muscular and/or neuromuscular disorders using immortalized and/or primary human and animal cells, including iPSCs, coculture and/or organoid culture systems.
  • Experience in or familiarity with skeletal muscle physiology, mechanics, and metabolism.
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging emerging technologies, particularly those around large data efforts such as transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics, high throughput or genetic screening, systems biology approaches, etc. are highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on cross-functional teams and projects; proven ability to lead teams is desirable. Ability to collaborate with external partners to successful conclusions is also desirable.
