The Role

Moderna is seeking an experienced Sr. Engineering Director to lead the Monitoring & Alarming team with our Engineering Excellence (EE) organization. This role is pivotal to enabling enterprise scale by establishing and maintaining universal visibility across the enterprise. The services and platforms you deliver are a missing centerpiece for all digital operations that will transform the way we work by unlocking an accountable DevOps model and supporting our strategy of driving modern architecture adoption through policy across Moderna. You will create universal observability across all assets, endpoints, technology adoption initiatives, policy adherence and digital operations. Every builder and initiative will take dependency on your work. The ideal candidate will have a dynamic range of understanding CMDB, build practices, and broad ability to adapt to evolving architecture.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Reshape the way Moderna thinks about asset ownership, DevOps, product team engagement / reachability, and leveraging Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).

  • Work with the executive leaders of Cyber Security, Cloud and Infra, Engineering Excellence, Data and Analytics Platforms and product engineering teams across the company to ensure your feature / service roadmaps support the execution of their roadmaps.

  • Lead the design, development, implementation, long-term roadmap, and maintenance of universal observability services.

  • Collaborate with peers in Builder Tools, Attribution Services, Incident Management, Service Now, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, and Data Platforms to ensure a cohesive and optimized approach to problem-solving.

  • Develop and execute strategies to vend Monitoring and visibility data as a utility service to all teams ensuring easy onboarding, tuning, API and UI access to crucial information.

  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, enablement and continuous improvement within the team and beyond.

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or 10 years of experience (5+ leading engineering teams).

  • Proven experience in systems and software engineering that solves for complex problems

  • Demonstrated ability to make tough tradeoffs in the face of constraints and prioritization ambiguity.

  • Experience owning a Tier-1 service and implementing the availability, resiliency and operational excellence practices associated to a service that cannot go down.

  • Experience with building, leading and performance managing engineering teams.

  • Deep understanding of cloud services and constructs (AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Conviction in collaboration and a track record of earning trust.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to simply complex topics for business partners and leaders.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Proven ability to limit the introduction of tech-debt and reduce existing tech-debt.

  • Deep experience with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and creating utility services used by humans and machines alike.

  • Experience leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

  • Experience leveraging containerization with orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive decisions and priorities.

Under Washington State law, Moderna is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for the jobs covered by this description. Base compensation for these positions in Washington State range from $209,000to $367,000. Actual salary determinations will take into account factors such as work location, prior education and experience, job-related knowledge, and demonstrated skills. Compensation decisions are made on the facts and circumstances of each case.
