IT Architecture is a core job family within Gilead's broader Information Technology (IT) group. IT Architects support Gilead business strategies and operations by taking the lead on design of technology solutions to enable more efficient business operations and faster, more effective achievement of business strategies and goals. IT Architects work closely with business leads and other IT partner functions to develop and maintain in-depth understanding of business needs and objectives in both business and technology realms. IT Architects play a critical role in use case analysis, prototyping, blueprinting, functional design specification, processing mapping, building, testing, validation, and deployment of business technology solutions. This group stays abreast of dynamics and evolutions in their areas of expertise to proactively recommend future solutions or other opportunities to the business.

You will lead the solution architecture for assigned projects and other initiatives and may oversee the work of other colleagues. You will work with business leads and other IT partners to understand business needs and objectives and translate these into potential technology, process, or other relevant solutions. You will apply expertise in multiple areas in one domain, e.g., applications, infrastructure, security, data, etc., to assess and recommend potential technology, tools, process, and architecture options. Where applicable, you will participate in the identification and evaluation of third-party software, hardware and/or service options to meet business needs and objectives. You will provide input into project plan development to ensure alignment to architecture requirements and standards. You will stay abreast of domain, industry and other relevant dynamics and evolutions to maintain and evolve your expertise. You will play a key role in supporting and modeling the culture within your team and the broader IT organization - a culture of high-performance, data-driven decision-making, value-driven prioritization, quality governance, and compliance.

Specific Responsibilities & Skills

The Director, R&D / PDM IT Architect will report directly to the Head of PDM IT and be responsible for overseeing functions including:

  • Core Competency - Demonstrated accountability and ownership, thrive in ambiguity, manage without domain expertise, excellent people skills across onshore/off-shore locations
  • Architecture Planning - Is accountable for all things technology and architecture within the R&D and PDM IT domains. This includes optimizes existing technologies for the future digital age and establishing new saleable innovative industry leading technology roadmaps looking ahead 3-5 years across R&D and PDM IT and business functions
  • Architecture Strategy - Is accountable for alignment of R&D and PDM architecture with the business organizations, and within Gilead IT enterprise architecture across other IT domains
  • Capability Planning - Is accountable for value-based capability planning, assessment, and roadmaps across R&D and PDM IT in partnership with related business functions
  • Risk Management - Is accountable for identifying architectural risks, propose alternatives and ensure mitigation actions within R&D and PDM IT domains
  • Architectural Financial Management - Is accountable for benchmark financial management for all architecture topics with strict focus on application landscape standardization/optimization, vendor and supplier streamlining
  • Data Privacy - Must deliver in accordance with any local data privacy regulation, ensure alignment with all IT Privacy and Security policies, and in accordance with all other regulatory standards and guidelines
  • Technology Outreach - Is responsible for scouting for innovative technology solutions and talent with a strong focus on future state competitive advantage for R&D and PDM IT
  • Business Partnership: Serve as technology counterpart to both R&D and PDM business organizations and support their technology operations
  • Management: Oversee architects across R&D and PDM IT and improve customer and patient experience, improve speed to market, reduce costs across commercial IT landscape
  • Domain Expertise - Has domain expertise within R&D and PDM IT and business landscape in areas of Pre-Clinical, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Biologics, Logistics, Serialization, and PLM including drive next best action with customers
  • Technology Transformation Expertise - Expert level experience in organization transformation to Agile-Scrum/Dev-Ops/Product team structures, capabilities and solutions
  • Architecture Standards Expertise -TOGAF
  • Negotiations and Vendor Management - Demonstrated customer focus, vendor management and negotiation skills

Essential Duties and Job Functions

General responsibilities for this position will include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Collaborate with business partners to identify future business needs and prioritize resources/effort on evolving capabilities from research to release
  • Serve as primary point of technology engagement with Business Partners on requirements definitions
  • Participate on business strategy and capabilities as intake for PMO & Technology Roadmap
  • Develop Business Cases for Ideation and Project Prioritization; ensure Business Value/Outcomes are realized and prioritize business needs
  • Ensure necessary business processes are documented and business ownership is available for projects and ongoing compliance activities
  • Establish Business Domain Architecture and partner with business to establish Analytics Strategy and collaborate with development of business solutions
  • Leverage key strategic commercial platforms as the foundation for delivering global business outcomes
  • Optimize organizational focus on core capabilities and leverage partners to provide high value services
  • Embed and measure technology user experience and value realization in every stage of investment decisions

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, business administration or related field, or 15+ years of IT and 5+ years of equivalent work experience in Pharma industry

  • 15 or more years in IT and business/industry
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of leadership responsibilities
  • Extensive IT experience in a corporate or other relevant business environment
  • Significant IT architectural experience relevant to IT area / domain of expertise, including use case analysis, prototyping, blueprinting, functional design specification, process mapping, building, testing, validating and deployment of IT solutions
  • Significant experience leading IT architectural projects of varying size and complexity for one or more business functions, with a focus on Agile
  • Significant experience supporting IT integrations and cloud transformations in a corporate or other relevant business environment
  • Experience and proven effectiveness contributing expert input into longer-range IT and business strategies and roadmaps for relevant area / domain
  • Experience overseeing, coaching and guiding the work of less experienced colleagues
  • IT experience in support of business areas in life sciences is preferred
  • Experience in business/industry (beyond IT), managing cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders

Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong leadership capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility
  • Expertise in budget planning, financial management, and workforce management
  • Familiar with many technologies and understands their capabilities and limitations
  • In-depth knowledge of dynamics and evolutions in own domain and is able to use this to apply to current and future architecture and develop domain expertise for less experienced colleagues
  • Thorough knowledge of IT architectural principles, practices, standards, frameworks (e.g., TOGAF), methods and tools across the spectrum of end-to-end solution design, as evidenced by independence and effectiveness in leading large and highly complex architectural projects
  • Advanced business and financial acumen and able to apply this to strategically evaluate business, economic and technical trade-offs of possible solutions and options for both the short- and longer-range
  • Knowledge of best practices in IT or related project management
  • Thorough knowledge of Agile and proven abilities to apply Agile methodologies to support IT solutions to meet business needs and objectives
  • Thorough knowledge of SDLC and SLC relevant to business functions and their business and technology needs, including knowledge of the multiple IT functions involved
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, e.g., AWS, and migration requirements
  • Knowledge of IT security, quality and risk management requirements relevant to assigned domain
  • Understands UX principles, practices and techniques and is able to apply to IT solutions to ensure a good user experience
  • Understands future trends in IT
  • Knowledge of or aptitude to learn regulatory requirements relevant to the biopharma industry
  • In-depth knowledge of all IT functions and services is preferred
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. Demonstrable abilities to effectively communicate project direction and status to varying organizational levels, including leadership teams, executives, and steering committees
  • Demonstrated excellence in complex project management and effectively managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong leadership presence with demonstrated ability to lead without authority and influence programs, projects and/or initiatives
  • Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions and strategic application to business needs including the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype
  • Ability to improve operational efficiency, service delivery, and information management across the IT organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others
  • When needed, ability to travel

The salary range for this position is: $195,245.00 - $252,670.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
