Job Details

The Bioprocess Development at the AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the CHO Cell Line Development group. The Scientist will be a part of the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) team to advance AbbVie’s biotherapeutics pipeline by providing NGS support suitable for cGMP protein manufacturing. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing various molecular biology tasks including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, library preparation, sequencing workflow executions and analysis.  This role requires establishing standard operating protocols to generate and analyze precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner. The ideal candidate will demonstrate good communication, presentation, and technical writing skills, team-working spirit, and strong scientific thinking approach in problem solving.

Key Responsibilities include:

· Participating in the design, planning, and execution of NGS-based assays.

· Following standard protocols for column-based and magnetic bead-based DNA/RNA extraction methods for DNA and RNA workflows.

. Performing PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR and ddPCR assays.

· Quality control, data analysis, and troubleshooting.

. Maintaining accurate lab records and documentation.

· Participating in new technology improvement projects.

· Performing routine tasks competently, independently and generate reliable and consistent results.

· Authoring technical reports detailing experimental procedures and results. Effectively present scientific data and concepts to various audiences

. Analyzing and critiquing results, noting significant deviations.

· Learning and effectively implementing new experimental protocols and/or techniques. Maintaining laboratory equipment, and optimize laboratory operations for efficient use of time

· Consulting literature to understand scientific purpose of assignments. Impacting projects predominantly through lab activity.

· Understanding and adhereing to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, and GxP compliance, where applicable.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years of experience, or Master’s Degree with no additional experience.
  • Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis required.
  • Proven skills to design, execute and interpret experiments and to determine next steps based on outcomes.
  • Strong interest in learning new molecular biology assays.
  • Attention to details, careful record-keeping, strong time management skills with executing multi-step experiments.
  • Strong interest in working in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task across projects while keeping deliverables within timelines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing techniques is highly desirable.  Experience with sequencing platforms such as Illumina MiSeq/NextSeq or Oxford Nanopore is a plus.
  • Experience of working with viruses is a plus.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools is preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory liquid handling automation is a plus.
