In this vital role the Executive Director (ED), Disease Area Strategy reports to the head of Integrated Access Strategy (IAS) Oncology and oversees a team of early Access Strategy Leads (eASLs) dedicated to the integration of access into early clinical development planning and development of Global Integrated Access & Pricing Strategies for early programs. This role oversees and provides leadership to a team of Directors for a group of assets within Early Oncology Franchise. The ED, Disease Area Strategy (DAS) is accountable for providing global managerial, leadership, strategic, and tactical support to ASLs as they develop their integrated access and pricing strategies. The ED, DAS will also be accountable for delivering on above-brand initiatives to build our strategic capabilities in light of a rapidly evolving environment.

Key initiatives may include:

  • Partnering with HEOR Head to ensure systematic and consistent integration of access into clinical development planning for oncology, including clinical trial design trade-off assessments

  • Understanding evolving payer value drivers & evidence needs in oncology levering case studies

  • Partnering with Marketing, Commercial and Development to input into disease area and therapeutic strategy

In close collaboration with their team, the ED ensures the smooth transition of programs from the early evidence and strategic development stage to the peri-/post-launch stage. The ED role is highly cross-functional and interfaces with both internal and external stakeholders. They will work closely with the IAS Oncology Head and cross-functionally with HEOR, Center for observational Research (CfoR), Pricing, Clinical, Medical, Commercial, Regulatory, Country Teams, Operations, and others to integrate functional perspectives and to socialize and seek buy-in on IAS strategy.

Key responsibilities include:

Provides oversight and strategic direction on other important early pipeline milestones including:

  • Competitive landscape assessments

  • Early pricing and access assumptions

  • Access input into target product profiles

  • Early patient reported outcomes, health economic and real-world evidence strategy

  • Evaluation of Healthcare Technology Assessment (HTA) gaps

  • Early HTA advice

  • Price assessment for complex/variable dosing regimens

  • Access/revenue trade-off assessment across trial design scenarios

  • Price/revenue optimized indication sequence

  • Early access plan

In addition:

  • Stays abreast of major macro-payer and policy trends, generates awareness of potential implications among team and stakeholders, and integrates key considerations into ways of working

  • Ensures timely and seamless integration of key insights (externally and internally via country teams and cross-functional partners) are integrated into strategies

  • Provides thought leadership on access related opportunities and challenges facing the business either at an IAS or franchise level (Disease Area Strategy) at various forums

  • Shares best practices and integrates insights and learnings across team members

  • Advances functional excellence and strategy capabilities in IAS Oncology

  • Shares insights and learnings from respective brands across the organization

  • Leads above-brand initiatives to advance Global Value & Access (GV&A)/IAS capabilities

  • Seeks buy-in from cross-functional stakeholders and generates awareness of the outputs across the organization as needed

  • Ensures operationalization of initiatives into existing ways of working

  • Drives innovative thinking and challenges status quo as needed

  • Leads and motivates team; ensures adherence to goals; identifies talent development opportunities, ensures coaching and monitoring of performance; identifies and removes obstacles to ensure team stays on track

  • Accountable for the administration and budget of the franchise

  • Represents access perspective at various forums including Therapeutic Area Governance (TAG)

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree with 6 years of access and pricing experience OR

  • Master's degree with 10 years of access and pricing experience OR

  • Bachelor's degree with 12 years of access and pricing experience AND

  • 6+ years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of oncology access strategy experience strongly preferred

  • Knowledge of drug development and launch readiness processes

  • Executive presence, communication skills and quality of deliverables with ability to tailor communication to a broad set of audiences

  • Ability to prioritize effectively and proactively identify where there are obstacles

  • Ability to anticipate and understand impact of macro-payer and policy trends

  • Ability to make informed but timely decisions even in face of uncertainty

  • Understanding of the payer environment in major countries, including coverage and reimbursement, pricing, health technology assessment, and health care policy

  • Knowledge of US healthcare system, including various payer channels

  • Ability to translate complex situation and pricing analyses to effectively communicate impact to Amgen business

  • Ability to review qualitative and quantitative pricing studies and to formulate price policy recommendations

  • Ability to manage in a highly fluid, interactive, matrixed environment and build business partnerships with affiliate and global colleagues

  • Ability to deliver individual results and results through others

  • Ability to connect with people and build bridges with other functions

  • Displays self-awareness and emotional intelligence

  • Listens, welcomes challenges, and is open-minded

  • Ability to simplify complex issues, succinctly and effectively communicate them

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $259,255 to $295,313.
