The Roles:

Exciting opportunities to work with Ph.D.-level computational biologists advancing Modernas mRNA therapeutics platform. This application covers three roles. Candidates with interest and skills fitting one or more of these are encouraged to apply.

Our co-op program goes from: January 16th to June 14th 2024. All applicants must be available for the entire duration of the program and available to work onsite in Cambridge, MA

Heres What Youll Do:

All roles:

  • Attend meetings with data creators and experiment designers to better understand end-user needs

  • Meet weekly (or more, if you prefer) with your mentor for guidance and collaboration

  • Present at least once to the Bioinformatics team

Oxford Nanopore role:

  • Develop new workflows using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT)

  • Explore methodologies for detection and quantification of modified bases with ONT

  • Assist in improvement of existing ONT workflows

  • Research methods and benchmark open-source tools

Oncology bioinformatics role:

  • Support data curation and analysis of sequencing data from public domain

mRNA Design and RNA structure role:

  • Apply new techniques to predict RNA secondary structure

  • Contribute to benchmarking structure prediction tools

  • Assist in development and improvement of visualizations and internal applications

  • Attend meetings with data creators and experiment designers to understand end-user needs

Basic Qualifications (all roles):

  • Minimum GPA of 3.4

  • Masters or PhD student preferred

  • Degree in Bioinformatics; Computational Biology; Computer Science preferred

  • Proficient in python and/or R

  • Comfortable working in Unix environment and high-performance computing

  • Data visualization

  • Scientific communication and presentation

  • Previous co-op or intern experience preferred

  • Must be curious, eager, open to learning, and independent

  • Authorized to work in the U.S

Preferred Technical Skills

All roles:

  • Previous experience working in cloud environment such as AWS

  • Previous experience with version control (git)

Oxford Nanopore role:

  • Experience using ONT-related bioinformatic tools (eg: guppy, nanopolish, minimap2, etc.)

  • Experience working with NGS alignment data (samtools, pysam)

  • Experience with direct RNA-seq

  • Comfortable with both R and python

  • Familiarity with bioinformatic pipelines

Oncology bioinformatics role:

  • Experience with RNA-seq and WES data analysis

  • Familiarity with stat-of-art bioinformatic pipelines for sequencing data analysis

  • Knowledge with immunogenomics or cancer vaccine is a plus

  • Comfortable with R and/or python

mRNA Design and RNA structure role:

  • Experience RNA secondary structure prediction

  • Experience working closely with molecular biology and biochemistry colleagues

  • Coursework in statistics or algorithms

  • Must be very proficient in python
