Vice President, Platform Chemistry

The Role:

The Vice President of Platform Chemistry is a senior leadership position within Research and Early Development (R&ED), responsible for driving innovation and excellence in the design, synthesis, and characterization of the fundamental components of our novel mRNA and delivery systems. In this critical role, you will report to the SVP of Research & Early Development, building a team with the goal of shaping the strategic direction of our chemistry efforts and collaboration with colleagues to ensure the successful transition of technology from discovery through clinical implementation to enable our pipeline.

The VP of Platform Chemistry will be adept at working across multiple functions, cultivating innovative thinking, driving high priority programs, and accelerating the transition of ideas into deployable technology. This leader will transform our discovery chemistry capabilities to enable high throughput augmented exploration of novel chemistry in mRNA and LNPs and to establish AI/ML capabilities and evolve our practices to integrate and leverage these capabilities.

Heres What Youll Do:

• Articulate a vision for Platform Chemistry and define functional strategy, applying deep domain expertise to conceptualize approaches to address R&ED needs and enhance collaboration with Technical Development

• Lead and professionally develop team of experienced, high-performing Chemists

• Lead the team in the creation and biological evaluation of diverse novel chemical matter; in addition, provide direct scientific leadership to cross-functional program leads driving novel mRNA and LNP technology discovery

• Define and lead the organization to execute against research plans and scientific deliverables with a sense of urgency

• Identify critical capabilities and resource needs to achieve objectives, manage budget, and provide the roadmap for future technology development and implementation

• Serve as a senior leader on the Platform Leadership Team, developing and evolving our holistic strategy and expanding your experience and influence beyond your core subject matter expertise

• Facilitate a strong culture of innovation and collaboration within and between Platform Research and Technical Development

• Deliver high-quality scientific presentations internally and externally to a variety of audiences, including leadership teams, governance committees, and scientific conferences

• Drive chemistry intellectual property strategy in collaboration with IP team and contribute to peer-reviewed research articles and patent applications

• Regularly assess external advances pertaining to mRNA medicines and medicinal and industrial chemistry, implementing novel capabilities as the field evolves

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

• Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field and 15+ years leading diverse groups of scientists

• Experience in a pharmaceutical research setting developing nucleic acid therapeutics is strongly preferred

• Highly effective leadership, including training and developing individual talent and building high-performing teams

• Ability to relentlessly prioritize and align efforts with high impact opportunities

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Thrives in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment

• Current presence or willing to relocate to Cambridge or Norwood vicinity
