Sr. Engineer II, Process Development

The Role:

The Pilot Scale Operations team is seeking a highly skilled and motivated full-time Sr. Engineer II to support nucleic acid pilot-scale production. Qualified candidates will have chromatography, enzymatic reaction, and tangential flow filtration expertise, and experience with experience with scaling and technology transfer of these unit operations. A successful candidate should have experience in large and small-scale equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; as well as authoring and updating equipment specific SOPs. This position will require excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as a focus on operational excellence and process optimization. Candidates are expected to lead people and projects, often cross-functionally. A successful candidate must demonstrate the independent drive and collaborative spirit to operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Heres What Youll Do:

• Be the receiving unit for technology transfer from Modernas Process Development teams, focusing on Nucleic Acid sciences, including DNA and mRNA

• Be expected to matrix lead other development scientists / engineers in defining process development and scale-up strategy, and implementing process control strategies

• Operate, maintain, and trouble shoot reaction, tangential flow filtration and chromatography skids (AKTA and Axichrom)

• Lead experiments to confirm robust process performance

• Characterize Nucleic Acid properties through collaboration with analytical and technical teams.

• Demonstrate and implement GLP-enabling best practices

• Demonstrate process suitability and manufacturability through scale-up chromatography, enzymatic reaction, tangential flow filtration, and other technologies

• Update and write standard operating procedure (SOPs) associated with Nucleic Acid production as needed

• Assist Pilot Development Lab and technical teams with project goals, resourcing, and scheduling

• Practice safe work habits and adhere to Moderna safety procedures and guidelines

• Adhere to documented waste handling procedures to respect environmental regulations

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

• Degree in Chemical/Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, or related technical discipline

• Minimum of 3 years (PhD) or 10 years (BS) relevant industry experience

• Demonstrated success in bioprocess development and scale-up, technical problem solving, and tech transfer are essential

• Experience with synthesizing mRNA and/or DNA

• Hands-on experience with chromatography, tangential flow filtration, normal flow filtration, and enzymatic reactions

• Strong communication skills as you will be responsible for having multiple interactions across operating and development teams
